I'd Be

If I were a gemstone, I'd be a carnelian.
If I were a scent, I'd be fresh-baked muffins.
If I were a pair of shoes, I'd be little brown flats.
If I were the weather, I'd be a rainy day.
If I were a facial expression, I'd be lost in thought.

If I were a car, I'd be a Mini Coupe.
If I were a time of day, I'd be dusk.
If I were a month, I'd be September.
If I were a place, I'd be the bookstore on a cold day.
If I were a liquid, I'd be a latte.
If I were a taste, I'd be richly raspberry.

If I were a sea animal, I'd be a jelly fish.
If I were a food, I'd be a red velvet cookie.
If I were a colour, I'd be something like auburn.
If I were a musical instrument, I'd be a baby grand.
If I were a flower, I'd be a moss rose.
If I were a song, I'd be "Early in the Morning, I'll Come Calling."

If I were a planet, I'd be Saturn.
If I were an object, I'd be a sketchbook.
If I were a fruit, I'd be a nectarine.
If I were a sound, I'd be the crickets' chirp.
If I were a day of the week, I'd be a definite Tuesday.

Happy Tuesday.

Moi

Many apologies for falling off the face of the planet the last few days. Schedule's been full, lots of work's been done, even a few social functions have been attended. Life has resumed for the time being.

In any case, I've spent all this week introducing myself over and over and over again. My teachers this year have taken more interest in me and my hobbies than ever before. (To put this in perspective, my math teacher this year wanted to know my favorite food. I'm not certain my math teacher last year even had my email address.)
Which, albeit often awkward and repetitive, is really very nice and thought-provoking. You learn a lot about yourself when the objective is to condense the essence of your personality to a list or a picture.

Land-Logged

Ever since I was able to write, I've kept a journal of one kind or another. When I was six, it was the tiny blue one with the pink lips painted on the front. When I was eleven, it was the glittery one with a big "R" in rhinestones on the front. Since then, I've probably filled a half-dozen or more.

I love how it feels to crack the spine and open up 120 pages worth of possibilities. I like watching the pages fill until you can flip through them and watch all the ink fly by. And I like to know that things got better, or that things worked out, or even that they didn't, but life moved on at least.

Lately, journalling has become part of my daily routine, especially when it comes to staying inspired. Sometimes it's nice to jot down an idea and take a refreshed look at it later.

Here's some of my journals and kinds of entries they see:

The Collected Journal

It's a book full of all the things I love. The expensive dress from a catalog I loved? It's in there. A poem I wrote when I should have been doing something else? It's there too. Pictures cut out of old National Geographics? Of course. It's a visual compendium of the inside of my brain, perfect inspiration for just about anything.

Once Upon A Time

Two things strike me when I think hard about people:
First, everyone is writing their own story.
Second, even in someone else's story, we're part of the cast.

I'm Riley- forever dubbed "the creative one."

I'm a writer, a crafter, a doodler of nifty drawings. I'm an every-day-explorer, a reader, a student forever. I'm a skilled hot glue gun-wielder. I'm a recorder of things big and small. I'm an in-home taste-tester, and a firm believer that nothing is ever as it first seems.

I collect bugs and rocks and pretty church dresses. I sometimes judge books by their covers, and I love to read fairytales. My mom says I'm wanderlust, and my friends say I'm crazy, but in a good way.  My hair's curly, and that's the way I like it. Occasionally I'll take coffee with my creamer, but only on special occasions.

And my story started out like everybody else's, but I'm working my hardest to make it extraordinary in all the best ways.
