Through the Zoo and Back Again

Today was our annual summer trip to the zoo- a tradition maintained for just about ever, as a last-minute trip before school begins for the year. It always makes for a pretty grand adventure, and the weather was pretty much perfect for it today.

Our zoo has this interactive Lorikeet exhibit where you can go in and feed the birds little cups of nectar, and I'll admit, that was one of my favorite parts ever. It was so weird to feel their little claws on your hand when they crawl on.
Not to mention, they're pretty used to human contact and aren't too shy about the camera, either.

Meanwhile, my brother's favorite was the meerkats for probably the fifth consecutive year, and I can't help but wonder if it has anything to do with the Meerkat Manor show that came on a few years back.  I can't help but agree, of course. They're pretty darn cute.

Popcorn and Dipping Dots for lunch, and a spin (quite literally) on the carousel.

There's also a pretty fantastic alligator exhibit, with more than a handful of critters in it. We arrived right after their lunchtime, so we might have caught a few in the midst of a siesta.

I've also been perpetually in love with the clouded leopards. There were two exhibits for those open; two had been there for nine years, and three for six months. They too, were snoozing blissfully.

There was a flock of flamingos out today, as well, plumage shiny and bright as ever.

And wallabies in the petting zoo! Most precious thing ever.

Today, we even got to (semi) comfortably view the tanked animals and fish. Most of the time, it's ridiculously crowded and loud, but it wasn't too bad. There's some cool creatures hiding in the dark there too. Like the axolotl. Or the snakes. Always fun.

It was the loveliest of all days, that is for sure and for certain.

Roar.
